New resident checklist for New Mexico

Driver license

No fixed day count is published; check with the New Mexico MVD. New arrivals pay a one-time $15 DWI records-check fee ($33 for 4 years or $49 for 8 years in total); bring 1 proof of identity and 2 proofs of New Mexico residency. Bring proof of identity, your Social Security number and two proofs of your New Mexico address.

Vehicle title and registration

The MVD doesn't publish a set number of days for new residents: once you live in New Mexico, a car you drive there must be registered there, and anyone working in the state 30 days or more within a 60-day period is presumed a resident. Out-of-state vehicles need a VIN inspection at an MVD office, and emissions testing applies in Bernalillo County. If the 4% excise tax applies to your vehicle, apply for a title within 90 days of bringing it into New Mexico to avoid a 50% penalty. Check the deadline with the New Mexico MVD. Switch your auto insurance to a New Mexico policy.

Taxes or fees on a car you bring: The 4% Motor Vehicle Excise Tax doesn't apply to personal vehicles acquired out of state 30+ days before establishing NM domicile. Otherwise it's due, minus a credit for sales tax paid in another state.

Annual registration: Based on vehicle weight and model year, for one or two years. A 2026 state law (SB 2) raised registration fees from July 1, 2026 and adds an annual fee for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles from January 1, 2027.

Extra yearly fee for an electric vehicle: none.

Establishing residency

Anyone employed in New Mexico for 30+ days within a 60-day period is presumed a resident for vehicle registration. Residency also decides where you pay income tax in the year you move; see taxes the year you move.

Your first-month checklist in New Mexico

  1. Register to vote at your new address.
  2. Update your address with the IRS (Form 8822), your employer and your bank.
  3. Make sure your employer withholds New Mexico income tax from your move date.
  4. Set up utilities and get renters or homeowners insurance. Owners with a mortgage here paid a median $1,260 a year for homeowners insurance in 2024 (Census ACS); premiums have risen in most states since, so get quotes.
  5. Keep your lease or closing papers and your license date as proof of when you became a resident.
