RelocateMath publishes estimates built from public data. Please keep these limits in mind:
- Taxes are estimates. We model 2026 federal and state income tax for W-2 wages and common retirement income with standard deductions, personal exemptions and the main state credits. City pages add the resident income tax of the principal city (for example New York City or Philadelphia) when you live inside city limits, or a typical suburban local rate when you live outside them. We don't model itemized deductions (except the move calculator's optional itemizing setting, which changes only the federal return), most credits, each suburb's or school district's own rate, or every special case, and some states hadn't published all 2026 figures when we reviewed them.
- Averages hide local differences. State medians for rent, home values and property tax can differ a lot from the city or neighborhood you're considering.
- Prices move. Moving quotes, mortgage rates, insurance premiums and utility prices change often. Our moving-cost figures are modeled ranges, not quotes.
- Rules change. State laws on residency, driver licenses, vehicle registration and retirement income are updated regularly. Always confirm with the official agency linked on each page.
- Your situation is not the average. Insurance figures are state averages, not a quote for your car or home; your price depends on your record, your property and your ZIP code. Cost-of-living comparisons use regional price levels, which may not match how you spend.
- Residency is decided by the states, not by us. When you become a resident for tax purposes depends on each state's own tests (where you live, how long, where your ties are). Part-year and two-state situations can be taxed differently from our simplified examples.
- Moving and shipping costs are ranges. They are fitted to published prices for typical moves; your quote depends on the season, the exact addresses, how much you move and the company.
- Rankings reflect our weighting. “Cheapest” or “best” lists combine data in the way each page explains. Different weights, or your own priorities, can give a different order.

RelocateMath is not a tax preparer, law firm, lender, insurer or moving company. We build our figures from public sources and check them with automated tests, but we can't guarantee that every number is complete, current or free of errors. Data on this site was last reviewed on September 25, 2026. If you find a mistake, please tell us; confirmed errors are fixed and listed in our corrections log.
