New resident checklist for Wyoming

Driver license

Within one year of establishing residency. Holders of GA, MA, MI, TN or WI licenses, and CDL holders, must apply immediately. Vision screening and written knowledge test required. Bring proof of identity, your Social Security number and two proofs of your Wyoming address.

Vehicle title and registration

Title through the county clerk and register with the county treasurer; a law-enforcement VIN inspection is required for titles from other states. No fixed day count is published; check with your county treasurer. Switch your auto insurance to a Wyoming policy.

Taxes or fees on a car you bring: The county clerk asks for proof of sales or use tax paid before issuing a Wyoming title. If you bought and used the vehicle while living in another state, the Department of Revenue's 'Statement of Residency for Motor Vehicles' and 'Affidavit Exclusive Use of MV Outside WY' forms may exempt it; ask your county clerk.

Annual registration: Registered through your county treasurer: a state fee plus a county fee based on the vehicle's value and age. From July 1, 2026, all-electric vehicles pay a $100 annual decal fee (plug-in hybrids $50).

Extra yearly fee for an electric vehicle: $100.

Establishing residency

Residency is established when you make Wyoming your home; the one-year license clock starts then. Residency also decides where you pay income tax in the year you move; see taxes the year you move.

Your first-month checklist in Wyoming

  1. Register to vote at your new address.
  2. Update your address with the IRS (Form 8822), your employer and your bank.
  3. Wyoming has no state income tax on wages, so ask your employer to stop withholding for your old state from your move date.
  4. Set up utilities and get renters or homeowners insurance. Owners with a mortgage here paid a median $1,672 a year for homeowners insurance in 2024 (Census ACS); premiums have risen in most states since, so get quotes.
  5. Keep your lease or closing papers and your license date as proof of when you became a resident.
