New resident checklist for Nebraska

Driver license

Within 30 days; vision test required when surrendering a valid out-of-state license (driving test at examiner's discretion); written and driving tests required if you can't surrender the old license. Bring proof of identity, your Social Security number and two proofs of your Nebraska address.

Vehicle title and registration

Title and register within 30 days of arriving; out-of-state vehicles need a $10 inspection by the county sheriff (VIN/title check). Registered through the County Treasurer. Switch your auto insurance to a Nebraska policy.

Taxes or fees on a car you bring: No use tax if you bought, titled and registered the vehicle in another state while a nonresident and used it there; if less tax than Nebraska's rate was paid on a recent purchase, the difference is due. Form 6 documents the exemption.

Annual registration: $15 registration fee plus Motor Vehicle Tax based on original MSRP bracket that declines with age (ends after 14 years), plus local/county fees; varies widely by vehicle.

Extra yearly fee for an electric vehicle: $150.

Establishing residency

Living in Nebraska with a principal Nebraska address (shown by two address documents) makes you a resident for licensing and registration. Residency also decides where you pay income tax in the year you move; see taxes the year you move.

Your first-month checklist in Nebraska

  1. Register to vote at your new address.
  2. Update your address with the IRS (Form 8822), your employer and your bank.
  3. Make sure your employer withholds Nebraska income tax from your move date.

  5. Keep your lease or closing papers and your license date as proof of when you became a resident.
