How moving containers work
- The company drops a container at your home (or you load at their facility).
- You pack and load it over a few days.
- They pick it up and ship it, often combined with other freight.
- It's delivered to your new home, or kept in storage until you're ready.

When a container is the right call
- You don't want to drive a big truck across the country, but full-service movers are over budget.
- Your dates don't line up. Storage between homes is built in, which is handy if you're renting first or waiting on a closing.
- You want time to pack. Loading over several days is easier than a single moving day.
When it isn't
- No place to park it. Many cities, HOAs and apartment buildings require permits or don't allow containers on the street.
- Very large homes. Several containers can end up costing close to full-service movers.
- Short moves. Under a few hundred miles, a rental truck is usually cheaper and faster.
Tips to save
- Declutter first; you pay for container space, so every piece of furniture you sell saves money.
- Pack tightly and heavy-to-light, and use furniture pads and straps so nothing shifts in transit.
- Get quotes for exact dates; prices move with demand, especially in summer.
- Ask what the quote includes: fuel, taxes, extra months of storage, and delivery fees.
